    Red Blend | Sonoma

From the rugged terraces of Napa’s staircase, this is 93-point Cab-based blend to showcase why the AVA is known for creating the most richly intense, age-worthy wines of the greater Napa region. A “serious cellar contender” promising great things for those who wait, it’s (half-retail) flagship access to jealously guarded elevation.

The only hillside terroir of Napa to benefit from the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay, Mount Veeder has been known since the 1860s for what sets it apart: the longest growing season and the lowest yields in Napa Valley, extremely steep slopes, shallow topsoil, and tiny berries that result in ultra-concentrated red wines. Mount Veeder, planted the first vineyards planted to all five Bordeaux varieties, ranging from 1,000 to 1,600 ft above the valley floor. Started by Michael and Arlene Bernstein, who released their first vintage in 1973, the winery's guided by the philosophy that each wine expresses the mountain soil in its own way.

Hence: the ’06 Reserve from Mount Veeder winery. What Enthusiast quite simply calls a" big, big wine,” it’s one made for the cellar; already showing the beautiful reduced shell and softened tannins that come from its time in the bottle. Made for fare that can stand up against its massive blackberry, cherry, and smoky oak notes, it’s the answer to the question, “how bold can Napa Cab get?” A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon laced with Malbec (7%), Petite Verdot (4%), Merlot (2%), and Cabernet Franc (1%), it had to be pried out of the hands of a few from the hands of thieves. Indeed, it's the essence of Reserve beauty in a bottle.

    Chateau St. Jean

    Region: Sonoma, CA

2009 marked Margo Van Staaveren's 30th harvest at Chateau St. Jean. During her long tenure with the winery, Margo has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process. As winemaker, she makes the final decisions involving blend and style to produce consistently high quality wines in the super premium and luxury category.

Margo is a firm believer that great wines are grown - a conviction she shares with the Chateau founders who led the way for Chateau St. Jean to become a pioneer of vineyard designated wines in the early 1970s. To achieve Chateau St. Jean vineyard designation, the superior quality of the vineyards must be proven year after year and the grapes must consistently exhibit exceptional varietal character.

The art of blending is the cornerstone of Margo's winemaking philosophy. To her, one of the greatest accomplishments is to create a wine style or signature blend that carries from vintage to vintage while still capturing the uniqueness of that particular growing year.

    Mount Veeder Winery

    Region: Napa, CA

The philosophy at Mount Veeder Winery is that each of our wines has its own remarkable way of expressing the mountain soil from which it was born. We believe that great wines are a reflection of their terroir—the combination of soil, topography, microclimate and people—and we believe that excellent grapes handled with minimal processing have the potential to produce the greatest wines.

Mount Veeder Winery was the first vineyard in Napa Valley planted to all five of the grape varieties used in a classic Bordeaux blend. We feel that blending is the key to crafting the most complete, balanced wine and enhancing the inherent characteristics of each variety. The ultimate goal is the creation of a rich, seamless wine.

Mount Veeder Winery was one born from the hard work and dedication of Michael and Arlene Bernstein. The Bernsteins first discovered the rugged property in the early 1960s and later bought it as a rustic retreat. In the ensuing years they transformed it into an enviable vineyard, almost by accident. After farming the property’s prune orchard for the first few years, a farmhand who lived on the property presented the Bernsteins with a bundle of cast-off grapevine cuttings. Michael stuck the unrooted cuttings into the ground and never gave them a drop of water. Miraculously, of the 60 cuttings planted, 58 lived. Michael turned his full attention to the vines and built his land into a thriving vineyard, ultimately making history as the first vintner in Napa Valley to plant one property to all five of the classic Bordeaux varieties.

The debut wine from Mount Veeder Winery was the 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that first vintage, Mount Veeder Winery has expanded to three vineyard ranches nestled high in the Mayacamas Mountains and continues to produce powerful, bold wines that are a true expression of this unique wine-growing region.

Resembling a giant staircase, Mount Veeder's vines are planted on wide terraces of earth cut into steep slopes. At elevations of 1,000 to 1,600 feet, the microclimate is very different from the Napa Valley floor. Above the fog bank, exposed to the gentle morning sun and protected from the afternoon heat by the surrounding mountains, grapes on these vines ripen slowly and evenly. And in autumn, the mountain's cool days and warm nights mean extra hang time.

    Brut Franciacorta

Ahhh...a rose by any other name; or rather (méthode) Champagne under another designation; it's what bubbly aficionados intrinsically seek out. Here, the sparkle comes from the Franciacorta DOCG in north-central Italy, where our Thieves all agree: “if Champagne ever extended their boundaries, this would be the outcome.” Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made in méthode traditional, the result is what Gambero Rosso awarded Two-Glasses. A dazzling beauty not likely registering on the radar of bubbly-lovers, it’s that special something just for you.

Lombardia, Italia is a region that doesn’t auto-translate to “Méthode Champagnoise,” but in Franciacorta DOCG, it’s all about the bubbles. A DOCG that only applies to the sparkling wines of the region, Franciacorta has been honing their wine techniques since the 13th Century (referenced by both Virgil and Pliny the Elder). Fermented in-bottle and aged on lees for a minimum of 18 months (as opposed to 15-month requirement in Champagne), it’s not Prosecco, but an Italian rendition of Champagne’s finest crémant.

A part of Il Mosnel’s series of high-end sparkling whites and rosés, the Brut is a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Bianco, and 10% Pinot Nero. “Absolutely delicious,” it garnered Two Bicchieri (Gambero Rosso’s second-highest rating). Unanimously described as graceful and elegant, it shows light, tiny, dazzling bubbles, following to a finish with just a touch of creaminess from its 24 months on lees in the bottle. The trifecta of stellar Italian access (sparkling specialists, 2 Bicchieri, méthode traditional), it’s as much for the bubbly-lovers as it is for those seeking Italian critics’ (<$25) amantes. Drink up.

    il Mosnel

    Lombardia, Italia

In the heart of Franciacorta, in Camignone, lies the historic villa with its 16th-century wine cellars and surrounding properties that offers eloquent testimony to the venerable winemaking patrimony that the Barboglio family inherited in 1836. This viticultural wealth was developed still further through the far-sighted efforts of Emanuela Barboglio, who planted the first modern, specialized vineyards and in 1968 was one of the first to produce DOC Franciacorta wine.

In 1976 the name of the winery was changed from Azienda Agricola Barzanò Barboglio to the current "il Mosnel," a local dialect word, of Celtic origin, that means "heap of stones," an apt characterisation for the site of the winery. Directing il Mosnel today is the fifth generation of winegrowers, the children of Emanuela Barboglio. Giulio Barzanò oversees production and sales, while Lucia Barzanò directs marketing, external relations, and administration. The family is fortunate to enjoy the support of a highly professional staff, expert agronomists, and experienced winemaking technicians, all of whom exercise painstaking attention to the production process and to the winery's growth.

Making A Difference

Every week, 42,000 people die because they lack access to clean water. 90% of those people are kids under 5 years old. We are proud to offer great wines at stellar prices.  But, we also are excited to be able to make a difference through our efforts. Therefore, we have partnered with some wonderful people who are dedicating their lives to providing access to clean water for people worldwide.  For every bottle of wine you purchase, we donate water - it's as simple as that.  Further, we work closely with our wineries and suppliers to be able to donate additional water if we sell out of the wines we feature.  We call this additional water "the bounty".  So, please tell your friends about CellarThief so we can keep offering great wines at stellar prices and make a big impact in the process.  Thank you and Cheers!
